If you were to list your skills then compare that list with jobs that match your skill list…that is your job horizon.  Those are the job you can easily do.  But there are jobs over that horizon that you can’t see (don’t brother applying for) because of your limited skill set.

Job hunting needs all the stops to be pulled out and it also requires you to take your skills to a new level. Job seekers always look for new approaches to secure a job in this tight job market. This challenge to land a job may seem insurmountable unless you can find the path over the horizon.  Improving your skill set will help you find that path and give you a new approach to secure a job.  You may have to go back to school and take some courses or get a certificate in you industry.

Expand your horizon

If you are currently working as an administrative assistant but you always wanted to get into marketing and human resources, give it a try without wasting your time. List down the skills needed for the respective field and then work towards getting your skills to matching the position.

Become the problem solver

Choose five companies you have heard good things about and do a lot of research on each of these companies. Analyze the job postings, look for the desired qualifications and also go through the job responsibilities. Once you find that the job is a good match then try to make connections between the employer’s requirements and the skills you possess. When you figure out the connection, make connections with the hiring manager and try to convince him that you can be valuable for the company’s business.

Keep up with the latest trends

Start expanding your information repertoire with the latest business trends. Now is the time to learn which businesses are doing well. Furthermore, ignorance never pays off.
